The Native Howls music has evolved into their own unique blend of rock, folk, bluegrass, alternative, and experimental genres, one of which is being coined as "Thrash Grass." Throw in some keyboards, harmonica, banjo, some djembe, and you get a glimpse of the musical complexity that defines their sound. Their lyrics embody a folk-like storytelling style; the music shines through with a rustic and clean sound. Their sophomore effort "Inukshuk" was released in 2015. They are currently working on a new E.P. as well.
Thunderhound is an American Rock and Roll band from the Pacific Northwest. Their music is characterized by driving guitar riffs, soaring guitar solos and a chorus of backing vocals to accent the front mans hearty, but lyrically hyper-literate prose. THUNDERHOUND is known for high-energy stage shows with a contagiously positive vibe. It is next to impossible not to have a good time at a THUNDERHOUND show. THUNDERHOUND is also known for their humorous, episodic videos that they release regularly. The band films, develops and produces all of their videos, promos and episodes on their own.
Klaw - Local darlings KLAW continue the Northwest tradition of raw, rude rock ’n’ roll passed on to them from the Mudhoneys and the Zekes of the scene. KLAW proudly pepper chunky riffs with catchy, fun melodies in tongue-in-cheek songs such as “Zombie Hipsters.” Their self-titled, self-released 2015 debut LP is fueled with punk-rock energy, but slows down enough to groove alongside your favorite stoner-rock bands of yesteryear. Bring earplugs or pay the price of feedback brain for days. KEVIN DIERS

Join us for a night of indie folk rock at The Big Dipper featuring The South Hill, Chris Molitor, and The Lunar Year. Doors 7/show 7:30. $8 in advance, $10 at the door.
Spokane’s own The South Hill has quickly gained a buzz since forming two years ago and releasing their debut album last summer. After living all over the country and being a part of a number of musical projects, The South Hill's five members eventually landed in Spokane, WA, where the band set down roots and started making indie rock in 2015. Smooth and captivating vocals and harmonies layered on melodic guitar forms the basis of their sound, rounded out by drums, cello, bass, and keys. The story-telling poetry of their lyrics is melded with a variety of instrumental influences, from blues to folk.
Chris Molitor is a recent transplant from LA, where he built up quite a following as a folk artist. He recently won The Bartlett Award for Best Singer-Songwriter and has quickly made a name for himself around Spokane. Honest lyrics and upbeat folk style stems from the simplicity of a Midwestern upbringing and a love for the adventurous open road. Chris Molitor is a story teller - using melody and rhyme to bring the listener into beautiful moments where hopes and fears collide.
The Lunar Year is joining the lineup as part of their west coast tour. An indie folk band based out of Philadelphia, PA, the group is led by front woman and writer Katie Burke. Their music swirls with emotion, filled with ethereal, veracious and often celestial sounds, sustained by Burke’s powerful and captivating vocals.

American singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn is a shape-shifter who can’t sit still. Since 2010 she’s worked under the moniker The Mynabirds, releasing three critically acclaimed and stylistically different albums on Saddle Creek: What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood (2010) and GENERALS (2012), both produced by Richard Swift, and Lovers Know (2015). She has also toured as a member of the Postal Service (2013) and Bright Eyes (2011), helped found Omaha Girls Rock (a non-profit helping young girls find their voices), and in 2013 gave a TED talk based on her “New Revolutionists” portrait project, exploring what it means to be a revolutionary woman in this day and age. Before the Mynabirds, Laura was a member of DC indie band Georgie James with Q And Not U’s John Davis, and also put out two self-produced solo albums on the label she founded herself, Laboratory Records.
The Mynabirds’ new album, BE HERE NOW, is a collection of 9 songs written and recorded in just 2 weeks in January 2017 following the Inauguration and the Women’s March. Singer Laura Burhenn worked with producer Patrick Damphier in his Nashville studio (which he was being evicted from to make way for luxury condos) to document the news and peoples’ intense emotional responses to it all in real time. No stranger to politics in her songwriting, Laura aimed to speak from the voice of the collective consciousness in a work of “Emotional Journalism,” singing the heartbreak, anger, exhaustion and resolute hope she witnessed during the Muslim travel ban, the final stand at Standing Rock, and every other news story that rattled America in that period. The album vacillates in style and feel to reflect a frayed nation, featuring a Burundian refugee choir on one song, and a cacophony of dissonant saxophones in a new national anthem on another. It is the last recording made in that space.
BE HERE NOW is being released very quickly as 3 digital EPs over 3 months to emphasize the immediacy of the songs. It will culminate in an official full album release on Saddle Creek in the summer of 2017.
The coming together of Rebecca Marie Miller & Joy Pearson as Portland, Oregon folk outfit, Lenore., is serendipitous, to say the least.
After individually hitting rock bottom — Pearson following a divorce and Miller after a period of destitution in LA —
the pair separately turned to songwriting in the search for a still point in their turning worlds.
After years of lending their abilities to other projects, including Saddle Creek’s The Mynabirds & Portland’s own High Water Jazz Band,
they finally found themselves spinning on the same axis when a chance meeting through a mutual friend, Pokey LaFarge, sparked
an immediate connection. A drunken night ensued & before they’d even scoped each other’s material, they had committed.
Now, two years since that fateful evening & Lenore. can boast having performed at legendary PNW venues including Mississippi Studios, Aladdin Theater & Doug Fir Lounge in Portland, as well as the Sunset Tavern, Triple Door & Tractor Tavern in Seattle.
They’ve opened for Eric Bachmann, Laura Gibson, Esme Patterson, Blitzen Trapper & ex-collaborators The Mynabirds & have
shared the stage with Peter Buck (R.E.M.), as well as Chris Funk & Jenny Conlee (The Decemberists).
Since forming Lenore., Miller & Pearson have gained full-time collaborators in seasoned Portland musicians
Edward Cameron (classical guitar) & Jessie Dettwiler (cello), who have contributed significantly to the evolution of
Lenore.’s sound — a dreamy melancholic blend of harmony-driven folk with an ever present sense of hope.
More recently, Lenore. began playing with a rhythm section that features a rotating cast of bassists & drummers.
Lenore. released their debut self-titled album produced by John Askew on 9/15/2017, and will embark on their first tour this October.

The Stone Foxes are an experience to dive into, to get wild with, to sweat with. "The Stone Foxes have an energetic style that's rooted in swampy, foot-stomping rock...ambitious arrangements with diverse moods ranging from acoustic twang to thunderous electric-guitar riffs."
– NPR/WXPN "WORLD CAFE"
Invoking the audience with their commanding stage presence, even jumping down into the crowd if the mood strikes. Their fans know they are in for something action packed and they light a fire in the band, just as the band spreads fire back into them. Guitarists digging in, lead vocals changing between two unique voices with impassioned nuance, and keyboard and organ sounds that fill the space with smoke and burning embers. There are crunchy drum tones, wailing harmonica draws and violin cries that can silence even the most raucous of rooms. But this is not a sit-down-and-watch kind of event. Like Elvis once said about rock n roll, “If you feel it, you can’t help but move to it.” The Stone Foxes' live show brandishes this kind of dynamic passion on stage. It's impossible not to feel it.

Since banding together in 2012, psychedelic cumbia-punk trio Thee Commons have made waves in and around their hometown of East LA. Featuring los hermanos Pacheco and one of several lively session bassists, these romp ‘n’ rollers have managed not only to marry two unlikely genres -- world’s apart -- in perfect pastiche harmony but have also compiled a prolific catalogue of music to which they toured through the United States in an extensive 32 days, 35 shows tour in the Summer of 2016. Named #15 on LA Weekly’s “LA’s 20 Best Live Shows of 2016” outranking the likes of ELO, Bruce Springsteen and The Who, Thee Commons have created a buzz with their vivacious performances. Chris Ziegler founder of LA Record wrote about Thee Commons, “Live, they’re fearless, confident and ready to go off-script at a moment’s inspiration. It’s wild stuff, just as it absolutely should be.” To which Chris Kissel of LA Weekly further comments, “If Thee Commons aren’t the best live band in Los Angeles, they’re damn near the top.”
